Idaho has a healthy population of Black bears, which are black in color, as well as   cinnamon, brown, honey, red, and even blonde. These bears average about 175 to 250 labs in weight, although males can get up to 500 pounds, and adult Black bears stand from approximately 4 to 7 feet, nose to tail, males being larger than females.

Bear hunting in Idaho is regulated by the Idaho Fish and Game Commission. Controlled big game hunts enable the management of growing bear populations throughout the state, as well as the preservation of Idaho’s wildlife resources. The hunting season for Black bears runs from mid April through June. Idaho bear hunting is a fruitful springtime pursuit that provides the most spectacular big game hunt of a lifetime. Sportsmen prefer bear hunting this time of year when this extraordinary giant’s coat is at its thickest.

Common bear hunting techniques include tree stand, ground blinds, or adrenaline pumping hound hunts.  Silver Spur also offers a spot and stalk bear hunt, which is run by jet boat on the Salmon River, where we cruise the mountainside to spot the bears. Silver Spur Outfitters & Lodge has a very high success rate with our bear hunts, consistently taking 40% black, 60% chocolate, cinnamon, or blonde.

Bear hunting in Idaho: Engage in a stimulating bear hunting excursion with Silver Spur Outfitters.

Black bears roam wide and varied foraging areas, usually among heavy thickets and brush. Bears prefer dense cover, such as mountain forests, mixed woodland, and heavy black timber. This favored, predatory, big game animal knows how to stay out of sight. Silver Spur Outfitters’ skillful guides know the best spots for hunting bears, which tends to be at the edge – right where an open area meets thick cover. Prime hunting areas also include areas that provide a food source for the bear – berry patches, abandoned orchards, or game trails that run parallel to rivers and creek bottoms.

Bears are hunted as they emerge from hibernation. We look for marks that indicate a bear has been occupying the territory, such as claw marks on the bark of a tree it climbed, tracks on the ground, or shredded rotten stumps where it dug for ants and grubs. In the spring, bears prefer to graze on fresh vegetation growth, and typically travel alone unless its mating season, which begins in late summer. The Black bear’s sharp senses, elusive nature, and utter savagery make it a challenging adversary to pursue in the great Idaho wilderness, and with Silver Spur Outfitters as your guide, you will be fully prepared for the challenge!
